There is a collision of artists going on here. A pool of creative minds, and colors splashing everywhere. Sometimes, the dashboard can showcase you the distorted reality in art form, right before your very eyes. Tumblr Magazine reveals its honor roll of tumblr artists, whose passion for art, in all from, whether be it in digital painting, graphic design, photography and photo manipulation.
Seems like tumblr artists that we have interviewed have one common denominator. They all started as an inactive tumblogger whol just loves to reblog things they see on the dash that captures their interests. Like when Ariel Magyawe, known for his mindblowing photo manipulations started as stalker of Tricia Gosingtian. And after creating an account and building up a photo blog, that’s when the drive started.
As for Mike Rebuyas, one of our resident photographers that never misses photowalks and keeps up with his exhibit of amazing photographs he believes that life outside tumblr decreases the tumblr artists we once knew. “When I first made my Tumblr account some three years ago, I was overwhelmed by the sheer number of visual artists who put their work here for a lot of people to see. Right now, although they don’t pop up in our dashboards as frequently as we’d like, I won’t say na nawala sila, since their works still proliferate our dashboards every now and then. Plus pa the fact that even in the rare instances that these artworks pop up, one can see the vast improvements these artists have had. Again, I definitely don’t agree with the notion that Tumblr is fast losing its artists.”
Vexel master, Infelice on the other hand stands firm on the belief that we are not losing our tumblr artists. “It is the opposite na nangyayari, kasi yung mga influences na naiwan o patuloy na ipinapakita ng mga matagal nang nagtutumblr ay naikalat na nila sa iba. Art is contagious.”
James Bernabe, known for his clean cut and meticulous graphic designs talks about the lack of appreciation as the reason behind our deminishing art bloggers.
TMPH: Other type of art you wanna try, or craft you wanna discover?
JAMESBOXED: Well, I’d love to try painting or doodling. I want to be the likes of vinquilop siguro who’s really good with digital painting. But I’d have to practice with real paint pa siguro before I could do well with digital painting. Doodling! I’d love to doodle if I could. Nai-inggit kasi ako sa mga doodlers kasi their imagination is spontaneous yung parang uupo ka lang tapos mauubos mo isang page sa kaka-doodle – it’d be great to spend afternoons doing that siguro doodle-doodle lang. Yey!
INFELICE: Gusto ko na talagang maging strobista - . Yung company namin kasi nag titinda ng camera/studio products, kaya i have the “perks” na magamit yung tinda namin. lol
MIKEREBUYAS: Aside from photography, I dabble in a lot of other art-related stuff, actually. I draw, sketch, illustrate for some clients and do a little painting on the side. One thing I’d really, really, love to learn though is creating digital paintings since I really sucked at it the first time I tried it HAHA.
ARIELMAGYAWEJR: Hmmm… my first love was really sketching, traditional art, and graphic arts. If I don’t click with a camera now, maybe I’m killing time through a sketch pad. And oh! I like to sing too. Hahaha!
TMPH: Your message to your fellow artists, aspiring artists and perhaps, sa tumblr newbies na din.
Don’t be afraid to try new things siguro. Don’t be afraid to change your style every now and then. It’s always hard to develop your own style kasi so you have to keep exploring talaga. Get inspiration from a lot of other artists, have your work critiqued and improve on them. Matagal rin siguro bago mo masabi na “eto na talaga yung style ko”, siguro for some time you’ll settle for a style pero there’s always room to grow and improve – that’s what’s great with art eh, you’re free to be whatever you want to be. At ang pinaka-importante siguro sa isang artist eh to love your own work, believe in your craft.
For Tumblr newbies, always prepare yourself for an adventure. Surround yourselves with bloggers with something great to offer. The dashboard is one hell of a digital experience and ikaw ang nagdedecide kung ano ang lalabas dun so choose the bloggers you follow. Also, make great things with the talent you have and believe in it!
INFELICE: Don’t compare your beginning to someone else’s middle.
MIKEREBUYAS: To fellow artists, stay awesome and keep on being inspirations for others. Let’s keep the art ball rolling, you guys haha. To aspiring artists and tumblr newbies: never give up. There’s no instant way to becoming good, just keep blogging, shooting, drawing, painting or what have you. Never underestimate yourselves and learn how to take criticism from others, since that’s the only sure-fire way to survive and thrive in an overly competitive field. Last words: NEVER STOP LEARNING.
ARIELMAGYAWEJR: Not really used to giving advices, kasi I think I am the one who need those. But here are my notes to myself:
-Make every piece of art you create part of yourself. Shoot, write, draw, paint, sing with your heart. But of course, it’s more practical to do it with a camera, pen, paintbrush, etc.
-Don’t overdo yourself to have a style or trademark with your art. Don’t find style. Style will find you.
-It’s not always sunny every day. There are days, you may feel dry, withered, blocked and uninspired. Let it pass. Do other things. You may find inspiration on other things and sometimes on the idea of being uninspired itself.
-And on using Tumblr, follow lots of blogs. Talk to people and communicate. Art is very contagious in a very beautiful way. Don’t find people to follow your craft, do your thing, and they will come. Don’t mind unfollowers, you can’t make all people to like your stuff. If they don’t want the privilege to have a tour on your creative mind, accept it. Tumblr is, most of the times, a variety show, Enjoy!
